KSP 2022-2023

The Food Industry in Koreatown

KSP will explore the theme of FOOD in our neighborhood. From K-Town’s famous KBBQ spots to Guatemalan traditional street food, we will interview the foodmakers, servers, small business owners and gardeners who make and inspire our community to be a national culinary treasure. KSP and local partners will also hold in-person events that celebrate our collaborations, such as our Culinary Foodmaking Workshops that will share recipes and important culinary techniques, such as fermentation, which is so important to preserving our cultural heritage. The older adults will play a critical role as the foodmakers and narrators who will be sharing the stories of their experiences, history, and recipes during this cohort.

KSP 2022-2023 Youth Participants

This cohort of KSP youth participants came from Koreatown high schools and/or have strong ties to the Koreatown neighborhood. We learned about the importance of food memories and gained first-hand accounts of what working in the K-Town food industry is like through interviews with waiters, chefs, and restaurant owners. Our students learned about the way culture and food affect the other, how food ties us to family and reflected on their own relationships and memories around meals.

KSP 2022-2023 Elder Participants

We interviewed the owners, chefs, food servers, and managers of iconic K-Town restaurants as part of our 2022-23 cohort. Our elder participants live primarily in Koreatown, Los Angeles. We interviewed them about their food memories and their experience in the K-Town food industry and heard the rich and varied stories of their lives.

KSP 2022-23 Highlights

  • KSP Screenwriting 2022

KSP strives to provide students with multi-faceted storytelling skills that provoke self-expression and creative thinking. The Screenwriting Elective welcomed college students to explore and develop fictional characters and transformation journeys of their own, grounded in the research of intergenerational social dynamics addressed in KSP curriculum.

  • Seeds and Storytelling

Koreatown Storytelling Program is working with SSI YA GI and Namu Farms on a seed, storytelling and food justice project that will explore Asian heirloom plants and herbs, biodiversity as cultural diversity, immigrant landscapes and food memories.
