Poetry & Storytelling Workshop with Katherine Bahena-Benitez
On Thursday, Feb. 26, KSP welcomed back our friend Katherine Bahena-Benitez for a poetry and storytelling workshop. Katherine is a queer Mexican Indigenous multidisciplinary artist who has led poetry workshops for KSP for the past three years. Her workshop focused on the importance of storytelling as a means of preserving emotional truth and as a tool for liberation. We learned how writing can help us give language to experiences or feelings that have been silenced, and that it can be used to imagine and build the new realities we hope for.
Katherine led us through some writing prompts to help us practice storytelling, such as “Describe a moment when you felt truly free,” or “What does freedom look like in your voice?” We took time to engage with these prompts in our own writing, and came back to share our reflections.
Thank you to Katherine for preparing yet another amazing storytelling workshop! These workshops equip our community with artistic tools to express themselves and harness the power of storytelling to document important narratives and create change in our communities.
